SEO FOR THERAPISTS, COUNSELLORS & PSYCHOLOGISTS

Get Your Therapy Practice Found on Google — By the Right Clients

Most therapy websites are invisible on Google — not because they’re poorly designed, but because they’re not structured around how therapists’ ideal clients actually search. There’s a smarter way to approach this, and it’s built around three specific areas.

✓ MSc Clinical Psychology    ✓ Therapy-specific SEO strategy    ✓ Managed service or coaching available    ✓ UK-wide & international    ✓ No jargon, no guesswork

Why Most Therapy Websites Don’t Rank on Google

The majority of therapist websites are built and then left — with the hope that Google will somehow find them and send clients their way. It doesn’t work like that. Google needs clear, specific signals about who you help, how you help them, and where you are before it will rank you for anything meaningful.

Generic pages titled “Therapy Services” or “About My Practice” tell Google very little. They compete with thousands of similar pages for search terms that are too broad to win. The result is a website that gets little or no organic traffic — and a therapist who relies entirely on directories, word of mouth, or paid ads to fill their caseload.

The good news is that there’s a clear, structured approach to fixing this — one that’s specifically designed for how therapy services are actually searched for online.

Common SEO mistakes on therapy websites

✗   One generic “Services” page covering everything ✗   No pages targeting specific disorders or presentations ✗   Therapy modalities buried in body text, never in page titles ✗   No mention of who the therapist specifically works with ✗   Location only mentioned in the contact page footer ✗   No blog or fresh content for Google to index ✗   Title tags left as default WordPress placeholders ✗   Competing against themselves with duplicate content

The Three-Pillar SEO Framework for Therapists

After working with therapists and counsellors across the UK and internationally, I’ve developed a specific framework for how therapy websites should be structured to rank on Google. It’s built around three distinct areas that map directly to how people search when they’re looking for a therapist.

01

PILLAR ONE

The Disorder or Issue

When someone decides to look for a therapist, they almost always start by searching for their problem — not for a type of therapy. They search for “help with anxiety”, “therapist for OCD”, “PTSD counselling”. Your website needs dedicated pages that speak directly to each of these presentations. Each disorder or issue you specialise in deserves its own page — written with genuine clinical understanding, not keyword-stuffed content. This is where my psychology background makes a real difference to the quality of what gets produced. Examples: Anxiety · Depression · OCD · PTSD / Trauma · Eating disorders · Relationship issues · Grief & loss · Burnout · Addiction · Low self-esteem

02

PILLAR TWO

The Therapy Type

Once someone has started exploring their options, many will search for a specific type of therapy — either because they’ve had a recommendation, done their own research, or been referred by their GP. “CBT therapist London”, “EMDR for trauma”, “DBT therapist online” are all high-intent searches. If you’re trained in one or more specific modalities, each deserves its own dedicated page — explaining what the therapy involves, what it’s best suited for, and why you specifically are qualified to deliver it. Examples: CBT · DBT · EMDR · ACT · Psychodynamic · Person-centred · Integrative · Schema therapy · CFT · Solution-focused

03

PILLAR THREE

The Client Demographic

This is the most overlooked pillar — and often the most powerful. Many people searching for a therapist are looking for someone who specifically works with people like them. They want a therapist who understands their background, identity, community or life stage — not just their diagnosis. Dedicated pages targeting specific demographics you work with give you a significant advantage over generalist competitors — and resonate deeply with the clients you’re best placed to help. Examples: Women · Men · LGBTQ+ · Couples · Teenagers · South Asian clients · Black & African clients · Online therapy · Arabic-speaking · NHS & key workers

Where the Real SEO Power Comes From — Combining All Three

Each pillar works individually. But the real ranking advantage comes from combining them. A page targeting a specific disorder, delivered via a specific therapy type, for a specific demographic is highly focused, faces far less competition, and speaks directly to exactly the client you want to work with.

Why This Approach Works for Therapists Specifically

This framework isn’t a general SEO strategy repurposed for therapy — it’s built entirely around the specific way people search for mental health support, and why that’s different from almost any other service.

🔎

Less Competition on Specific Pages

A page targeting “CBT therapist for OCD in Bristol” competes with far fewer websites than a generic “therapist Bristol” page — and the people who find it are exactly the clients you want to attract.

🤝

Clients Feel Understood Immediately

Landing on a page written specifically about their issue, their therapy type, or their community is far more compelling than a generic services page. It builds trust before they’ve even read your bio.

📈

Content That Compounds Over Time

Every new page you add targeting a specific combination is another route into your website from Google. Ten focused pages outperform one generic page — every time.

🧠

Written With Clinical Understanding

These pages need to be clinically accurate, sensitively written, and ethically sound. With an MSc in Clinical Psychology, I can write or guide content that meets those standards — not just keyword targets.

What’s Included in My SEO Service

The three-pillar framework provides the strategic direction. Here’s what I do to put it into practice — whether I’m managing everything for you, or coaching you through it yourself.

🔍 Keyword Research

A full audit of the search terms your ideal clients are actually using — mapped across all three pillars. You’ll get a clear picture of which terms to target first, which have the best opportunity, and which to build towards over time.

📄 On-Page Optimisation

Title tags, meta descriptions, heading structure, internal linking, image optimisation, and page content — all reviewed and optimised in line with the three-pillar strategy and current Google best practices.

✍️ Content Strategy & Writing

A content plan built around your specific specialisms — identifying which disorder, therapy type, and demographic pages to create, in what order, and what each page should cover. I can write the content for you, or guide you to write it yourself.

📍 Local SEO & Google Business Profile

For therapists seeing clients in person, local SEO is essential. This includes optimising your Google Business Profile, building consistent local citations, and targeting location-specific search terms to appear in local map results.

⚙️ Technical SEO

Site speed, crawlability, mobile performance, schema markup, XML sitemaps, and Google Search Console setup — the technical foundations that allow everything else to work as it should.

📊 Reporting & Progress Tracking

For managed clients, clear monthly reporting on keyword rankings, organic traffic, and enquiry trends — so you always know what’s improving and what’s being worked on next.

SEO That Respects Your Professional Standards

SEO for mental health services requires a different standard of care than SEO for most other businesses. The content on your website is read by people in vulnerable states — and how it’s written matters enormously, both ethically and clinically.

What ethical SEO looks like for therapists

Every piece of content I write or recommend is clinically accurate, written with sensitivity, and free of the sensationalist or fear-based language that can characterise poor mental health copywriting. I won’t recommend tactics that exploit a potential client’s distress to generate a click — not because it’s bad for SEO, but because it’s simply wrong.

My background in clinical psychology means I approach content with the same care a good therapist would bring to a psychoeducation session — informative, warm, honest, and in the client’s genuine interest.

This shows in the quality of the websites I work on — and in the type of clients those websites attract.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does SEO take to show results? Honest answer: typically 3–6 months before meaningful ranking movement, and 6–12 months before consistent organic enquiries. SEO is a long-term investment, not a quick fix. If you need clients quickly in the short term, Google Ads is a faster route — and both can work together effectively.
Do I need a lot of pages for this to work? You don’t need dozens of pages overnight. The three-pillar approach is designed to be built up gradually and sustainably — starting with the highest-priority combinations for your specific practice and adding to them over time. Even 5–10 well-targeted pages make a significant difference.
Can you write the content for my website? Yes. Content writing is part of my managed SEO service, and I can also provide it as a standalone service. Given my background in clinical psychology, I’m well placed to write accurate, sensitive, and well-structured content about mental health presentations and therapeutic approaches.
I’m on Psychology Today / Counselling Directory — do I still need a website? Directories are a useful supplement, but they’re not a substitute for your own website. You have no control over how your profile ranks, you compete directly with every other therapist on the platform, and you’re dependent on a third party for your online presence. Your own website builds an asset you own and control.
What if I only specialise in one or two areas? The framework works just as well for specialists — arguably better. A therapist who focuses exclusively on trauma therapy for women has a very clear set of pillars to optimise around, and can become genuinely authoritative in that space on Google relatively quickly. Specialism is an SEO advantage, not a limitation.
Do you work with therapists outside the UK? Yes — particularly therapists offering online sessions to English-speaking clients internationally. The three-pillar framework applies equally well regardless of geography, with adjustments to location targeting and local SEO as appropriate.
